South Africa Update: An email from Susan

From Susan Milne:
“Good Morning sunshine – I’m writing to you from Johns’ computer – much easier on the fingers!  As you can tell, we are having the most wonderful time.  The weather has been hot, hot, hot! Most days in the McGregor area, it’s been in the upper 90s into the 100’s (wowser).  Dad and I have been very good and have worn loads of sun screen! While in McGregor, we have been eating, drinking, lazing about, walking around the town – so quaint and picturesque.  I think you could come here and photograph the houses of McGregor – very neat homes! Oh, and the stars at night – OMG personified!

Last night we ate outside at a restaurant – the Green Gables – across the road from John and Janis’ house. We sat outside drinking south african white wine and enjoyed the evenings cool breeze (thank goodness), stars and dined along with Madge and Jack – two Scots folks – Jack is a riot to say the least! Then the 4 of us came back to the house and continuted to drink – red muscadel – on the back porch-lovely (the night before we had the red muscadel in our ice cream – Yaw!).  Daisy their half siamese cat, half not sure what she is hung out with us as did Mr. toad (of toad hall – although he might be a frog – we’re all not sure) (honest, I can’t make this stuff up).

As for our afternoon yesterday, we took a ride into Robertson – had a nice wine tasting at Cloverfield winery. One of their wines was called Shamrock – dad would not imbibe! Then we made our way to Bon Courage (french accent) – where we wine tasted, then had lunch.  I had a greek salad w/tatziki on pita bread – Dad had a bacon, egg, cheese, banana sandwich – hold the cheese! Can you imagine banana with egg & bacon???   He loved it!  On the way back home, we stopped in McGregor Winery – where John bought 24 bottles of wine for approximately $2.61 a bottle – it was pensioners day and a slight discount was given.  More for us to drink and be merry!!!   Oh yes, incorrect spellings – almost anything goes here.  Spelling is not everyone’s forte.  Therefore, you can have Earl Gray tea spelled as Earl Grey or Earl Gray on the same menu – why not!!!

The one day I did miss telling you about was our second day in Muizenberg (which was refered to in the days of yore as Jewsinberg-oy). We got up early that morning, walked about then went to breakfast at a fun restaurant called Knead – love, love, love the food here (have I said that before)!!!  After breaky – which took so long – the owner apologized to us with chocolate croisants – we went into CapeTown.  We took the ferry to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years. It was so heart rendering – you can’t even imagine what the prisioners had to go through.  There were criminal prisioners also.  But most prisioners were there because of the color of their skin (blacks, indians and colored-mixed race) and their political belief of freedom.  Indians and coloreds were given shoes and a little bit more food than the blacks.  All of it so unfair.  Like John said when we arrived, it looks like a Nazi concentration camp – very true words.  One of the sayings written on the shops wall was Never Again! Heart breaking to say the least!!!  After our return back to the Cape Town water front we shopped (yes, dad included) at the V&A (Victoria and Alfred) shopping center.  Cooler inside.  That night we dined at the Olympia Cafe – dad had split pea soup – which actually had a swirl of yogurt on top, which of course was ?’d by dad – I said it was butter, he asked John who chimed in with butter – Dad ate the whole thing, loved it – he is getting good (with or without his knowledge).

Today we are going to a luncheon in McGregor at Shebeen (formerly illegal pub) Carols.  The menu is sushi or prawns or steak roll and sangria to drink – it should be a hoot with many locals joining in. Carol is the Shebeen queen!  There is a Christmas Carol who runs the deli and there used to be a Postal Carol in town also.

Susan

P.S. Okay – here is some info – In the States, Kugel is a Jewish noodle dish – in South Africa (Japs-jewish american princesses) are known as Kugels which is a Jewish princess of Johannesburg.

Like I said before – I can’t make this stuff up!”
